The bankruptcy court requires tax returns or tax transcripts with your bankruptcy petition. Either one is acceptable.
What happens if you don’t have a copy of your tax return?
If you don’t have a copy of your tax return you can request a tax transcript for free from the IRS.
There are three ways to do this.
- Call 1-800-908-9946 and ask the IRS for the transcripts.
- Request the transcript in the mail by filling out a form 4506-T and mailing or faxing it to the address or fax number on the instructions page
- Visit the IRS’s Get Transcripts website.
Whichever source you use, you should choose “Return Transcript.”
Please keep in mind that this process can take up to 2 weeks.
