How to obtain student loan information for your bankruptcy

Student loans are not generally dischargeable in bankruptcy, but the court still requires them to be listed in your bankruptcy petition. This requirement can be difficult because it is hard to keep track of student loans, especially while they are in forbearance. The Department of Education has, however, created an Internet database that will help you find all of your lenders for free. It is called the "National Student Loan Data System" (NSLDS).

To use the service go to www.nslds.ed.gov, click the "Financial Aid Review Button," and follow the instructions. This will provide you with a free print out of all of your student lenders and their contact information. You can then call these lenders to obtain their correspondence addresses so that your attorney can properly list them in your bankruptcy.
